Car Subscriptions in New Zealand

New Zealand's car subscription market is small. Earlier subscription services from used-car and rental companies have come and gone, and today the main dedicated option is EV subscription from Zilch, alongside long-term rentals from rental companies that serve the visitor market.

Many drivers also use monthly car-share memberships for occasional trips rather than having a car full time.

A subscription or long-term rental can save you dealing with registration (rego), Warrant of Fitness inspections, insurance and servicing, and it avoids the depreciation of buying a car you may only need for a few months. That makes it worth considering for new arrivals, working-holiday visitors, people between cars and businesses with short-term needs. Coverage is concentrated in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, so check availability if you live elsewhere.

New Zealand

Why choose a car subscription in New Zealand?

Rego and WOF handled

Vehicle licensing (rego) and Warrant of Fitness checks are the provider's responsibility, so there are no renewal reminders to track.

Insurance sorted

Car insurance is not compulsory in New Zealand, but subscriptions and rentals usually include at least basic cover, which protects you from large repair bills.

Try an EV without buying

With EV incentives ended and road user charges now applying to electric cars, a subscription lets you test an EV before committing.

Road user charges managed

For EVs and diesels that pay road user charges, some providers handle RUC purchases so you don't have to.

Avoid depreciation

You hand the car back at the end, so you are not exposed to falling resale values.

Ideal for temporary stays

Long-term rentals suit new migrants and working-holiday visitors who need a car for a few months.

Guide

How car subscriptions work in New Zealand

You'll need a full driver licence; overseas licences in English (or with an approved translation) can be used for up to 12 months after arrival. Providers set minimum ages, commonly 21 or 25. Expect a bond or credit card hold, and check what the insurance excess is and whether you can pay to reduce it. Fuel or charging, tolls and parking are usually extra.

Things to check before you subscribe

  • Check whether kilometres are unlimited or capped.
  • Compare the insurance excess and optional excess reduction.
  • Confirm which cities the provider covers and whether delivery is available.
  • Ask whether you can take the car on the Cook Strait ferry between islands.
  • Read the minimum term and notice period for ending the subscription.

Business

Car subscriptions for business

Businesses use subscriptions and long-term rentals to cover new hires, projects and seasonal peaks without buying vehicles. Fringe benefit tax may apply if staff use a vehicle privately, and the GST and income tax treatment of rental costs depends on your situation, so check with an accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Are car subscriptions common in New Zealand?

Not very. Dedicated subscription services are few, so long-term rentals and car-share memberships fill much of the gap.

Is insurance included?

Usually some cover is included, with an excess. Check the excess and whether you can reduce it.

Do I pay road user charges on an EV subscription?

EVs are now subject to road user charges. Ask your provider whether RUC is included in the price.

Can I use an overseas licence?

Generally yes, for up to 12 months if it is in English or accompanied by an approved translation. Providers may have extra rules.

Can I take the car between the North and South Islands?

Some providers allow ferry travel and others restrict it. Check before you book.
