Car subscriptions in Germany
One monthly payment. No long tie-ins. An independent, editorial guide to car subscription and flexible lease providers in Germany.
Germany is one of Europe's most developed car subscription markets.
The Auto-Abo, as it is known locally, bundles the car, insurance, vehicle tax, servicing, tyres and the periodic HU/TÜV inspection into one monthly payment, usually with a chosen mileage package. Providers range from specialists such as FINN and online marketplaces such as FAAREN to rental groups like SIXT and Free2Move, plus EV-focused firms and manufacturer programmes.
The market has also consolidated. Several platforms have rebranded, merged or stopped taking new customers in recent years, so it pays to check that a provider is actively selling before you commit. Typical minimum terms range from one to six months, with most fixed terms between six and 24 months. Prices vary widely depending on the model, term length and mileage, and many providers charge a one-off set-up or delivery fee on top of the monthly rate.
Germany
The general inspection (HU), routine maintenance and wear repairs are normally arranged and paid for by the provider, so you are not chasing workshop appointments.
Most Auto-Abo rates include third-party liability plus comprehensive (Vollkasko) cover, which removes the need to shop for a separate policy, though an excess usually applies.
Kfz-Steuer, registration and deregistration are handled by the provider, so there is no visit to the Zulassungsstelle.
Germany requires winter-suitable tyres in wintry conditions, and many subscriptions include suitable tyres or seasonal tyre changes.
You hand the car back at the end of the term, so falling used-car values, particularly for EVs, are the provider's problem rather than yours.
With the national EV purchase bonus no longer available, a short subscription is a practical way to test whether an electric car suits your charging situation.

Würzburg-based marketplace listing dealer subscriptions from one month
FAAREN is a marketplace rather than a fleet owner: it lists subscription cars from partner dealers and providers. Flexible contracts run from one month up to 36 months, and minimum-term contracts can be cancelled monthly with notice once the minimum has passed. The fixed price typically includes comprehensive insurance, wear-related maintenance, the HU inspection, tax, registration and seasonal tyre changes, though inclusions vary by partner. Mileage allowances depend on the individual listing.

Free2move, the Stellantis mobility brand, offers monthly subscriptions in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart. Terms run from two to 18 months, and the advertised prices assume 500 km per month, with extra kilometres charged per km. Insurance with standard comprehensive cover and maintenance are included, and you can pay to reduce the excess in the app. A refundable deposit is taken upfront, and the car is handed over digitally with a physical key.

nextmove specialises in electric vehicles and offers an EV subscription that can be cancelled monthly. A one-off start fee falls as the term lengthens and disappears from 12 months. Mileage packages range from 500 to 3,000 km per month. Comprehensive and liability insurance, maintenance and wear, the HU inspection, registration, winter-capable tyres and the broadcasting fee are included. Charging is not, and an excess applies. Rental giant's Auto-Abo with 3, 6 or 12-month terms and the option to pause
SIXT+ is the subscription arm of the SIXT rental group. You book a vehicle category rather than a specific model, on fixed terms of three, six or 12 months. The base price covers vehicle tax, maintenance and wear, the HU inspection, liability insurance, winter tyres, roadside assistance and a basic mileage package that can be changed in the app. Longer terms include fuller protection. A one-off set-up fee applies, and you can pause for up to three months.

Fleetpool subscription brand whose online shop has been discontinued
like2drive was a well-known Auto-Abo brand run by Cologne-based Fleetpool, which also operated several partner subscription brands. Fleetpool now states that the online shops for its brands are being discontinued, while existing contracts remain valid until they expire. New customers should look elsewhere; existing customers should contact Fleetpool directly about their contract.
Guide
You choose a model, term and monthly mileage package online, pass an identity and credit check (often including a SCHUFA query), and then collect the car or have it delivered. Providers set their own minimum age and licence-holding rules, commonly 18 to 23 with at least one year of licence history, and some charge a refundable deposit or one-off set-up fee. Fuel or charging, parking, fines and extra kilometres are not included.
Business
Many providers offer business subscriptions for sole traders and companies, sometimes with VAT-exclusive pricing and invoices suited to bookkeeping. If an employee also uses the car privately, German company car benefit rules may apply. Ask a tax adviser how a subscription is treated for your business before signing.
It is a car subscription: one monthly payment covers the car plus insurance, tax, servicing and inspections. You only pay separately for fuel or charging and any extras.
Some providers and marketplaces offer one-month terms, while others start at three or six months. Shorter terms usually cost more per month and may carry higher set-up fees.
Yes, most providers run a credit check, often via SCHUFA, before approving a subscription. Requirements differ, so check the provider's eligibility page.
