Car Subscriptions in Finland

In Finland, car subscriptions (autotilaus) and minileasing have become a practical middle ground between private leasing and ownership.

Finland's car fleet is among the oldest in the EU, and new-car prices are pushed up by car tax, so a monthly fee that covers insurance, vehicle tax, servicing and seasonal tyres is an attractive way to drive something newer without a large outlay.

Toyota's KINTO Flex is the most established subscription, with Toyota and Lexus models available at dozens of locations from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. Rental groups have followed: Europcar runs Kausiauto with Toyota, SEAT, Skoda, VW and Audi models, and SIXT+ Minileasing offers flexible rentals for one month to around half a year. Monthly prices typically start around €500–630 including 1,500–2,000 km.

Why choose a car subscription in Finland?

Seasonal tyres handled

Winter tyres are compulsory in winter conditions from December to February; subscriptions typically include changes and storage.

Vehicle tax included

The annual vehicle tax (ajoneuvovero) is built into the monthly price, as is insurance.

Inspection taken care of

The provider handles periodic inspection (katsastus) and scheduled servicing.

No car tax outlay

Car tax (autovero) raises new-car prices; subscribing avoids a large upfront purchase and resale risk.

Wide pickup network

Providers such as KINTO have pickup points in many towns, not only in the capital region.

Easy EV trial

One-month commitments make it simple to test an electric car through a Finnish winter before buying.

Guide

How car subscriptions work in Finland

You order online, choose a commitment period and mileage package, and identify yourself with Finnish online banking credentials or a credit check. A payment card is usually required, and some rental-based services take a deposit or card hold. Drivers typically need a valid licence and to meet the provider's minimum age. Insurance with an excess is included; fuel or charging, parking and any driving abroad fees are extra. Most services require notice before the next billing period to end the subscription.

Things to check before you subscribe

  • Compare the included kilometres and the price of extra kilometre packages.
  • Check the damage excess and whether reducing it costs extra.
  • Confirm the notice period, often two weeks before the next billing period.
  • Look for seasonal surcharges in Lapland or in summer.
  • Check whether driving to Sweden, Norway or Estonia is allowed and at what cost.

Business

Car subscriptions for business

Companies can use subscriptions and minileasing to bridge gaps in their fleet or for temporary staff, and KINTO and Europcar offer business versions. Taxable benefit (autoetu) valuations and VAT deduction rules for cars are specific, so check with your accountant or Vero how they apply to a subscribed car.
