Car Subscriptions in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of Europe's more mature markets for flexible car use.

Alongside the hugely popular private lease (private lease) contracts of 24 to 72 months, a distinct auto-abonnement segment has grown up: all-in monthly plans covering insurance, maintenance and road tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting), usually cancellable monthly after a short minimum term. Business short lease, aimed at zzp'ers and companies, overlaps heavily with the consumer offer.

The market has also seen change. Lynk & Co, which helped popularise subscriptions from Amsterdam, announced in late 2025 that it would phase out its subscription model in favour of dealer sales. Today the main players are leasing companies such as Ayvens, rental groups such as SIXT and Hertz, specialist short-lease firms such as Blankert, and manufacturer-backed brands such as Stellantis' Drive4joy. Many advertise no BKR registration, which is a key difference from private lease.

Netherlands

Why choose a car subscription in Netherlands?

No BKR registration in many cases

Unlike private lease, several Dutch subscriptions state that they are not registered with the BKR credit register, which can matter when you later apply for a mortgage. Always confirm this with the provider.

Road tax and insurance included

Motorrijtuigenbelasting, insurance and APK inspection are typically included, so the monthly fee is close to your total cost apart from fuel or charging.

Cancel monthly after a short term

Many providers allow monthly cancellation after one, three or six months, compared with multi-year private lease contracts that are costly to end early.

Try an EV before committing

Subscriptions are a popular way to try an electric car in a country with dense charging infrastructure before taking a long lease.

Useful for expats and newcomers

Several providers explicitly target expats who need a car quickly without a Dutch credit history, though identity and payment checks still apply.

Flexibility for zzp'ers

Self-employed drivers can use business short lease for project work without committing to a long contract.

Guide

How car subscriptions work in Netherlands

To subscribe in the Netherlands you usually need a valid driving licence, a Dutch address or BSN in many cases, a bank account or credit card in your name and to pass an identity and credit check. Minimum ages range from 18 to 25 depending on the provider. Some plans are paid monthly in advance by credit card; others use direct debit. Monthly kilometre bundles commonly range from 500 to 3,000 km, and insurance excesses (eigen risico) vary widely, from a few hundred euros to well over a thousand. Delivery may cost extra, while collection from a branch is often free.

Things to check before you subscribe

  • Check whether the contract is registered with BKR, especially if you plan to apply for a mortgage.
  • Compare the monthly kilometre bundle and the price per extra kilometre.
  • Ask for the insurance excess (eigen risico) and what damage you are liable for at return.
  • Confirm the minimum term and notice period; 'monthly cancellable' sometimes only applies after 3, 6 or 12 months.
  • Check delivery fees, one-off registration fees and whether you must collect from a branch.

Business

Car subscriptions for business

For company cars available for private use, Dutch rules on bijtelling (the taxable benefit added to income) apply regardless of whether the car is leased, bought or subscribed, with different rates for electric and fossil-fuel cars. Business short lease and subscriptions are usually quoted excluding VAT, and zzp'ers may be able to treat costs differently depending on their circumstances. Speak to a tax adviser or check with the Belastingdienst before choosing between a subscription, short lease or long-term lease.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between private lease and an auto-abonnement?

Private lease usually runs for 24 to 72 months with a fixed price and early-termination costs, and is registered with BKR. An auto-abonnement is typically shorter and cancellable monthly after a short minimum period, at a higher monthly price.

Is a Dutch car subscription registered with BKR?

Many providers say their subscriptions are not registered with BKR, but this depends on the product. Ask the provider in writing before signing.

What happened to Lynk & Co's subscription?

Lynk & Co announced in November 2025 that it would gradually phase out its subscription model in the Netherlands and focus on dealer sales. Existing subscribers should check directly with Lynk & Co about end dates.

Can expats get a car subscription?

Yes, several providers target expats. You will generally need a valid licence, identification and a payment card in your name; some may ask for a Dutch address or BSN.

Is road tax included?

In most all-in subscriptions motorrijtuigenbelasting is included in the monthly fee, along with insurance and maintenance. Fuel or charging is normally extra.
