About elmo

elmo was a UK electric car subscription service set up in 2019, with Oliver Jones as one of its co-founders. It offered rolling monthly subscriptions with no deposit. Comprehensive insurance, servicing, maintenance, breakdown cover and road tax were included, and extra mileage, additional drivers and charging could be added. Cars could be swapped or the subscription cancelled with 30 days' notice. Models ranged from the Fiat 500e and Renault ZOE to the Peugeot e-2008 and Tesla Model 3, and the service was open to private and business customers.

elmo later became part of Constellation Automotive Group, which also owns Cinch, webuyanycar and BCA. In November 2023 the company said it was defleeting to raise cash, and many customers had their cars collected at about a month's notice. In April 2024 Car Dealer Magazine reported that elmo Drive had been wound down. Its latest accounts, to April 2023, showed a loss of about £16.5m. Constellation did not give a formal reason for the closure.

The elmodrive.com website now shows only a short wind-down notice, and former customers are directed to an email address. elmo no longer offers subscriptions.

elmo: frequently asked questions

Why did elmo stop trading?

In November 2023, elmo said it was reducing its fleet to raise cash, and Car Dealer Magazine reported in April 2024 that its owner, Constellation Automotive Group, had wound the business down. Its last accounts showed a loss of about £16.5m, but no formal reason was given.

Can I still subscribe to an elmo car?

No. The elmodrive.com website only shows a notice that elmo Drive Limited has been wound down. Other UK providers offer monthly EV subscriptions with insurance included.

I was an elmo customer. How do I get in touch?

The wind-down notice on elmo's website asks former subscribers with questions to email hello@elmodrive.com. Keep records of any charges or refunds you are disputing.

How did an elmo subscription work?

Subscriptions rolled monthly with no deposit. Insurance, servicing, maintenance, breakdown cover and road tax were included, and you could swap or cancel with 30 days' notice. Extra miles, more drivers and charging cost extra.

What should I look for in an alternative?

Choose a provider that is currently trading and open about its notice periods, mileage and damage charges. Check what happens if the provider needs the car back before your term ends.
