About Autonomy

Autonomy is a US subscription company, founded by TrueCar founder Scott Painter and launched in early 2022, that began with Teslas and now offers a broader mix of mainly electric and Ford models. Current listings include the Tesla Model 3, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Bronco Sport, Explorer and F-150, Volkswagen ID.4, BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV. Former Mercedes-Benz executive Fred Weick became CEO in 2026.

You pay a start fee and a monthly charge by credit card. Higher start fees (shown as $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 tiers) reduce the monthly payment, and posted prices do not vary by credit score. After a 31-day minimum the plan renews monthly, and you can cancel with 14 days' notice. Maintenance, title and registration are handled by Autonomy, but taxes, insurance and a refundable security deposit are extra.

Autonomy has operated in California, Texas, Florida, Washington, Arizona, North Carolina and New York, with pickup or paid delivery. It suits drivers who want an EV without a lease and are happy to arrange their own insurance.

Autonomy: frequently asked questions

Does Autonomy include insurance?

No. Posted prices exclude insurance, taxes, the start fee and a security deposit, so you need your own policy.

What is the minimum term?

There is a 31-day minimum, after which the subscription renews monthly. Autonomy asks for 14 days' notice to cancel.

How does the start fee work?

You choose a larger or smaller upfront payment; a larger start fee lowers your monthly price. The security deposit is refundable at the end if nothing is owed.

Which states does Autonomy serve?

Industry reporting lists California, Texas, Florida, Washington, Arizona, North Carolina and New York. Autonomy describes availability as select US locations, so confirm your address with them.

Is there a credit check?

Autonomy runs an eligibility check, but its posted prices do not change with credit score. Its CEO has said approval relies on other indicators such as driving history.
