About Land Rover
Land Rover began in 1948 when the Rover Company launched a simple, aluminium-bodied utility vehicle inspired by wartime Jeeps. Designed for farmers and working use, it was quickly adopted by armed forces, expeditions and rural businesses around the world, and its descendants became the Defender. It was famously sketched in the sand of a Welsh beach by Rover's chief engineer, Maurice Wilks.
The Discovery followed in 1989 as a more family-friendly off-roader. After changes of ownership involving British Leyland, BMW and Ford, Land Rover became part of Jaguar Land Rover under India's Tata Motors in 2008. JLR now presents Range Rover, Defender and Discovery as distinct brands, with the Land Rover name acting as a heritage and umbrella mark. The current Defender, launched in 2020, comes in 90, 110 and 130 body lengths, while the Discovery and Discovery Sport offer seven-seat family practicality. JLR's main engineering and design centre is in Gaydon, while Defender production is based in Slovakia.
Land Rover on a car subscription
Land Rover models attract subscribers who need genuine off-road or towing ability for a period, such as a winter in the countryside, or who want to try a Defender before buying one. Insurance is a key check: these vehicles are high-value and can be targets for theft, so look at the excess and any security requirements. Also check mileage limits, towing permissions in the contract and fuel economy, as there are currently no fully electric Land Rover-badged models.

Land Rover subscriptions: FAQs
Can I get a Land Rover on a car subscription in the UK?
Yes, Defender and Discovery models appear with some UK subscription and short-lease providers, though choice is narrower than for mainstream brands. Availability changes regularly.
Is there an electric Land Rover?
Not under the Defender or Discovery names at present; the first fully electric JLR SUVs are being launched under the Range Rover brand. Plug-in hybrid versions of some models are available.
Can I tow with a subscription Land Rover?
Some providers allow towing and others restrict it or require a tow bar to be specified in advance. Check the contract terms and insurance cover before using the vehicle to tow.
