About SEAT
SEAT, short for Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo, was founded in 1950 with backing from the Spanish state and technical support from Fiat. Its early cars were licence-built Fiats, and the SEAT 600 of 1957 played a big part in bringing car ownership to ordinary Spanish families. SEAT cars are mainly built at its factory in Martorell, near Barcelona.
Volkswagen took a stake in the 1980s and gained full control in 1990, giving SEAT access to Volkswagen Group platforms and engines. The brand became known for sporty, good-value models such as the Ibiza and Leon. Its performance offshoot, Cupra, was spun off as a separate brand in 2018 and now handles the group's Spanish electric models, while SEAT itself focuses on the Ibiza, Arona, Leon and Ateca with petrol, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid power. The Ibiza and Leon have been consistent sellers in the UK, and the brand is popular with younger drivers because of its keen pricing and sporty FR trim levels.
SEAT on a car subscription
SEAT is a sensible subscription choice for drivers who want an affordable, well-equipped hatchback or small SUV on a flexible contract, perhaps for a young driver or as a second car. The Leon e-Hybrid plug-in can suit those who want some electric driving without relying entirely on charging. Check the mileage allowance, the insurance terms for younger drivers and whether servicing is included. SEAT does not currently sell a fully electric model in the UK.
